Archival Footage: Librarians of Second Life ® March 17, 2007 (HD 720p)

So this is a very early machinima that was created back in Feb. 2007. It was originally captured at 720x480... so as you can see it looks pretty crummy up-converted, if that's a word, to 1280x720. Luckily YouTube accepted it as HD even though the quality is pretty poor. BUT... it's a pretty cool window into the early days of the Alliance Virtual Library and a collaborative effort to present a machinima at the ACRL poster session in Baltimore, 2007.

Shown emedded at 864x531 instead of 1280x720.

The title proclamation needs a bit of explanation... some excerpts below
Second Life: The Journey toward Virtual World adoption
.... In order to see the library community of Second Life in context, it is necessary to follow some of the recent Second Life milestones. The proclamation “I am Library” is an ode to self-discovery, in an individual sense; for the people who are the library communities of Second Life, it’s a journey of exploration filled with collective curiosity and creativity as the current presence of “Library” evolves within the context of the greater virtual landscape.....
I am both physical and virtual.
Imagination and creativity…
I am part of a simulated 3D environment created by its users.
Yet I am more. I am global.  I am local.
I am Community.  I am social.
I am sharing, collaboration and learning.
I am Library.
I am part of a trans-media journey where destination is experience.
I am the structures and open space, brought to life by the residents of the virtual world.
I am an extension of the physical world relying on broadband and accelerated graphics.
I am here.  I am real, part of the collective creativity…”

The paper and accompanying presentation were given at the Bridging Worlds Conference in Singapore, Oct 16-17, 2008, exploring the library experience in Second Life. The video takes us on a visual journey through the virtual environment; meeting some of the librarians and educators, collaborators and partners. It introduces virtual worlds and their increasing significance to the library and educational communities, show-casing the work of the Alliance Virtual Library (AVL) founded and coordinated by the Alliance Library System of Peoria, Illinois, USA. Over the last 2.5 years, AVL has explored what it would be like to provide library services in virtual worlds, beginning with one librarian on a parcel of virtual land to a footprint that now comprises 50 islands, the virtual equivalent of 1.26 square miles, the size of Angel Island, standing proud and strong in the San Francisco Bay.
What are some of the issues and ongoing challenges facing libraries as they consider the creation of a virtual presence? What does a library “feel like” in a virtual world? (see accompanying video) How are libraries integrating Second Life with social networking sites such as FaceBook, Twitter, Delicious, YouTube, blogs and their existing web sites? Join us for this virtual world exploration and new media demonstration, I am Library.

ThinC Press and ThinC Book need your vote on the Jira! I was trying to create a ThinC Book for Virtual Worlds, Real Libraries.

HVX Silverstar: Hi there,
This came up today for me as I was trying to make a ThinC book for Abbey and Lori and found that my antiquated ThinC press for making multiple copies would no longer work. It seems that none of the versions are working properly now due to this bug.
Please vote on the bug that is currently causing havoc with Toneless Tomba's very cool (librarians love it) ThinC Press.
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2938?ticket=ST-2289-cNk4hs9jYBCfWPLpCcnDhNmURfIvlzvzYpe-20

[20:49] HVX Silverstar: You will need to log into the Jira server using your SL name and password. The log in link is at the top right of the page.

You will find the "Votes" link at the left of the page in the margin. There are currently 95 votes and 22 people watching the progress.. well, we hope progress.

Don't forget to order the book for your library: http://infotoday.stores.yahoo.net/viworeli.html

Hi Bill, we love PowerPoint... well, in Second Life we do! It's a great tool for creating images that can be shown on screens, placed against the dark skies of midnight.... and super for signage.
